Why is insurance so expensive? Do you find this valuable?

Unfortunately, health care in the United States is very expensive. The insurance of GM Southwest is contract with the university and thus will cover all students regardless of your previous health history. Do you find this valuable?

Hi! On my offer letter (PhD program, Microbiology), I was told that 82% of the Premium for Medical Insurance would be borne by the program. How much would that translate to in dollars? Also, how much does Dental Insurance cost in addition to Medical Insurance? Is that too covered partially by the graduate program?

Do I need to obtain an international Insurance policy before and during my travel to Blacksburg? Is that recommended?

Thanks..

Gaurav

It is always a good idea to have travel insurance but this is not required by the university.

The 82.5% is equal to $1799. Please note that you receive this benefit only if it is applied toward the GM Southwest insurance offered through the university. If you wish to purchase more than the $50,000 coverage level, the same amount ($1799) will be applied toward the higher coverage levels of GM Southwest.

Dental insurance is not covered in this basic fee and I do not know the current rates. I would suggest that you look on the insurance webpage for GM Southwest and they will update the rates.

Thank you very much for the answers. I went to the GM southwest website at https://www.gmsouthwest.com/Default.aspx?tabid=412 and found a graduate brochure. In case I need Dental Insurance, I guess I can indicate that when my Insurance forms are being completed during orientation. How am I charged for my share of the Insurance premium? Through My VT? Thanks again for your help! Do you find this valuable?

Your portion of the insurance is paid through deductions taken through Payroll. The amount is divided and equal amounts deducted from your stipend during the academic year.
You can indicate your dental insurance when you complete the forms at Orientation.

Hi!
Why insurance with one depentend for international graduate students is so expensive?
Students pay only $2180 for themselves, but with spouse - $6907!
According to http://www.grads.vt.edu/igss/application_prearrival/financial_reqs.html "An additional $4,000 will be added for accompanying spouses".
But it is even less then $6907 - $2180 = $4727! What is about other expenses?
May be i don't understand smth correctly?
